The editor interface

Author Stefano Bussolon

With netsorting an editor can create it's own tests, add groups and items and create different questionnaires. Moreover he can analyze the data collected. Everything can be done using a web interface. It is possible to create a new test, to create the groups for the cardsorting and to insert the items. The editor interface of netsorting is still in a beta version.

Register as an editor

If you are interested in using netsorting you have to register as an editor.

How to register

Go to the netsorting \hrefhttp://www.hyperlabs.net/hci/netsortinghome page and follow the instructions.

Creating and editing a test

Create a new test

In the editor's summary page click the Create a new test link. The New test form gives you the opportunity to create the test. You have to insert the name of the test and a description; you can add an url of a web page that gives further infos to the users. You can choose the language for the user's interface. At the moment english and italian languages are supported. Once created, the test is listed in the editor's page.

Edit the test

To edit the test, click on edit it in the editor's page. The test summary page will be presented. Here you can edit the infos you provided, add new questionnaires, new card sorting groups and new items.

Adding a questionnaire

In the test summary page click on add a new questionnaire. Here you have to provide some infos:

  • The type of questionnaire;
  • A description of the questionnaire;
  • The instructions for the partecipants;
  • The comments you wish to add to the questionnaire (they will not be presented to the partecipants).
  • An url to further informations for the partecipants.

Types of questionnaire

Netsorting is not just card sorting. Netsorting implements three main types of interfaces:

  • the production interface, where the partecipants are asked to write their answers: an open questionnaire;
  • the Likert interface, where the partecipants are asked to rate a list of items on a scale;
  • the card sorting interface, where the partecipants have to classify a list of items.
  • The three main types of questionnaire can be used in different ways, and even combined together. In the open card sorting questionnarie, for example, the card sorting interface is used for the classification, and the production interface is used in asking the partecipants to label the groups created and to describe the criterion of the classification. At the moment, the following types of questionnaires are implemented:

    • production / test: production of items (free listing) for the dominium of the whole test; it uses the production interface;
    • production / groups: production of items (free listing) for each group; uses the production interface;
    • prototipicallity of the items; uses the Likert interface;
    • importance of the items; uses the Likert interface;
    • open card sorting; uses both the card sorting and the production interface;
    • closed card sorting; uses the card sorting interface;
    • interfaccia per il data entry di questionari di card sorting somministrati in modalità carta-matita

    Adding the card sorting groups

    To perform a card sorting questionnaire (both open and closed) you have to add some groups to the test. To do this you have to go to the test summary page. In the section labelled existing groups there is a form to add an arbitrary number of groups. Insert the number of groups you wish to add in the field Number of groups to add and press the button. In the Groups form page you can add the label of the groups you are creating. If you wish to perform an open card sorting the labels can be omitted.

    Adding te items

    The procedure for adding the items is pretty similar to that used for adding the groups. The main difference is that for the items the labels are mandatory.

    The resources of the questionnaires

    Once a questionnaire has been created some resources are provided.

    The page for the partecipants

    This link points to the User form page. This is the page that has to be used to recruit partecipants. Add this link to the page of your site or send it via e-mail.

    The dummy page

    Use this link to try the test or to show it to your clients. The user interface is the same, but the data entered is saved on the database as dummy and can therefore be erased and excluded from the data analysis.

    The list of the partecipants of the questionnaire

    This link points to the List of the Partecipants page, where all the partecipants of the questionnaire are listed. For each partecipant some information are provided:

    • the date of somministrazione;
    • the IP address of the partecipant;
    • the experimental condition of the partecipant.
    • some anagraphical data, like age, sex, education level and expertise with the internet.
    • a link is provided for each partecipant that summarizes it's answers.
